I think we’re now safe to talk about the now-infamous head smash scene in Curry Barker’s record-breaking Obsession, which continues its box office dominance and keeps him hot as ever going into the summer.
What’s so interesting about Obsession is that the movie could have easily been a thriller and played it safe, but instead Barker made the conscious decision to take it as far as he could. Based on the trailers, you might think it’s just a Twilight Zone-esque romantic thriller, but the truth is it’s a full-blown horror movie, and it is violent and scary. So much so that the theatrical version of the movie is different from what was shown during its festival run.
As we all now know (spoiler), there is a shocking scene where Nikki (Inde Navarrette) appears outside of a car window, smashes it in, grabs another girl’s head, and slams it into a steering wheel not once, not twice, not three times, but maybe 50 times until she’s basically a puddle of mush. And apparently, according to Barker himself, they had to trim this down to avoid an NC-17. It is still shocking. It is still borderline NC-17. It is incredible.
Horror fans always want to see everything. It’s part of our DNA, and we want to see the full head smash sequence. It’s now become the unicorn of Obsession, and thankfully, Barker is already teasing a director’s cut.
He says he’s got a lot of footage that he has to dive back into, and it’s going to be a project. But if Focus Features wants it, he’ll do it. It’s just a matter of finding the time.
But after the movie continued to blow up at the box office this weekend, topping $50 million domestic, I think it’s a sure thing. I think you can stamp it guaranteed: we will get a director’s cut.
“I would love to do a director’s cut of this just because there’s so many things that are not in the movie,” he tells Popternative. “That would be really fun. But it would literally be a project for me. I would have to set aside some time to really dive into the footage again. It would have to be something that Focus [Features] really wants and I would be like, ‘Yes, let’s do it.’”
Again, this interview took place before the release of the movie, and now that it’s become a booming success, I don’t think there’s a world where we don’t get a director’s cut, especially with Barker himself openly wanting to deliver it to fans.
Here are the full details on the NC-17 edit of the film fans are dying to see.
