Countess Elizabeth Báthory: Sorting the Truth From the Lies [Murder Made Fiction Podcast]

Countess Elizabeth Báthory of Ecsed is widely regarded as one of the world’s most prolific serial killers. A Hungarian noblewoman born in 1560, she’s said to have murdered more than 650 young women while bathing in the blood of her unfortunate victims. As punishment for these grisly crimes, Elizabeth was walled up in the tower of her own castle and isolated until her death in 1614. Since then, her story has become the stuff of legend, spinning in strange and supernatural directions.

But what elements of her life can we actually prove? Was Elizabeth Bathory a sadistic murderer? Was she an immortal vampire akin to Dracula himself or an innocent woman targeted by men who wanted her land? Like most true crime stories, the truth lies somewhere in between.

In the latest episode of Bloody FM’s Murder Made Fiction, Jenn walks Joe through the sordid details of this gothic story, from Elizabeth’s scandalous teen years and her marriage to a celebrated war hero to disturbing rumors about what Castle Csejte and the small team of household staff dedicated to her every whim.

Next week they’ll dive into their first expired text, 1971 Hammer Horror film Countess Dracula.

And if you want even more Murder Made Fiction, be sure to check out the pod’s Patreon feed, where Jenn and Joe have ~60 of bonus content including coverage of American Horror Story: Hotel plus a mini episode on the 2006 film Stay Alive.
