‘The Surfer’ Director Lorcan Finnegan Talks Crafting His Take On Ozploitation

the surfer

Irish director Lorcan Finnegan is known for his visually fascinating and genre-melding works, from Vivarium to Nocebo. With his latest film, The Surfer, Finnegan continues that trend, but through the lens of sun-bleached Ozploitation, a subgenre of Australian genre films from the 1970s and 1980s known for their low-budget sleeze. Finnegan harnesses that energy to craft a singularly bizarre takedown of toxic masculinity led by the ever-impressive Nicolas Cage.

In the film:

A man returns to the idyllic beach of his childhood to surf with his son.  But his desire to hit the waves is thwarted by a group of locals whose mantra is “don’t live here, don’t surf here.”  Humiliated and angry, the man is drawn into a conflict that keeps rising in concert with the punishing heat of the summer and pushes him to his breaking point.

We spoke with Finnegan about Nicolas Cage’s outrageous spray tan, creating a modern-day Ozploitation film, and getting the film’s colors just right.
