‘Heartworm’: New Horror Survival Game Now Available From DreadXP

Heartworm

Calling all ‘90s kids with a fondness for the 32-bit console games of yesteryear. We’ve got exciting news regarding a retro throwback from Dread Central’s game distribution arm Dread XP. Today marks the launch of the PlayStation-inspired survival horror game Heartworm! If you have fond memories of blistering your thumbs playing titles like Resident Evil or Silent Hill, this game was made with you in mind.

Developer Vincent Adinolfi conceived the game as an homage to classic horror survival games, and he’s even tweaked the aesthetic to match the output of the era by which the game is heavily inspired. Heartworm uses pixelation filters to recreate the boxy aesthetic of retro games and even features an inventory screen designed to invoke nostalgia for that bygone era.

The game tasks players with several different objectives, including solving puzzles and engaging in combat. Don’t expect an easy go of it, though; your only weapon to defend against enemy forces is a camera.

Heartworm developer Adinolfi understands that a bit of nostalgia goes a long way for some. Accordingly, he has designed the game to feature customizable settings that allow the player to dial the nostalgia up or down depending on personal preference.

You can pick up a copy of the game via Steam for $14.99. The developer is currently offering a 10% launch discount, which brings the total down to just $13.49. But wait, did we mention that you can try before you buy? Well, you can! There’s a free demo available, so you may want to give that a whirl to see if Heartworm might be up your alley.

The setup for this indie horror game goes like this:

Step into a world where memories and mourning blur the lines between reality and supernatural visions. In this atmospheric survival horror game, you’ll follow Sam, a young woman overcome with grief after the passing of her beloved grandfather. Her quest for closure leads her into a deep rabbit hole of online forums, and ultimately to a remote haunted house up in the mountains. What begins as a desperate attempt to reconnect with the past quickly spirals into something more sinister and inexplicable, as she pushes deeper into the unknown armed with only a camera and her determination to venture further.
