‘Open Water’ Adds Terror to an Unsolvable Mystery [Murder Made Fiction Podcast]

On Sunday, January 25, 1998, Thomas and Eileen Lonergan joined a scuba diving excursion on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. Two days later, their belongings were found abandoned on the deck of the Outer Edge. Scuba items belonging to the couple would eventually wash up on various shores, including an ominous message begging for help, but the Lonergans would never be seen again.

We’ll never know what really happened to this unfortunate couple abandoned at sea, but Chris Kentis’ Open Water attempts to recreate their tragic deaths.

In the latest episode of Bloody FM’s Murder Made Fiction, Jenn and Joe explore the cinematic version of this harrowing story. A scuba excursion goes dreadfully wrong when a botched head count leaves Daniel (Daneil Travis) and Susan (Blanchard Ryan) stranded in the middle of the ocean. But how does this unnerving film capture the details of a story we can only assume? Does the gritty style add verisimilitude? Does filming with real sharks amplify the terror? Are Daniel and Susan relatable characters and is there anything more frightening than thunderstorm sharks?

Jenn and Joe continue a month of shark horror stories by diving into the dangerous waters of this terrifying film.
