‘Black Phone 2’ Dials Up A Sinister New Trailer Ahead of October Release

black phone 2 fantastic fest

If you ask me, a new horror icon was born when Ethan Hawke stole the show as The Grabber in The Black Phone. His performance is menacing, intense, and wholly unique. Thanks to the strength of Hawke’s unforgettably sinister turn as a child murderer and the film’s strong showing at the box office, a sequel is headed to a theater near you on October 17, 2025. I’m so anxious to see the sequel that I can hardly stand the anticipation. Thankfully, the fine folks at Universal have seen fit to release a trailer to satiate our collective appetite.

It’s tough to know how effective a film will be solely from a two-minute preview, but I can at least say that I like what I see. The idea of The Grabber returning as a supernatural entity from beyond the grave raises the stakes, which is precisely what a sequel should do.

The upcoming follow-up is written by C. Robert Cargill and Scott Derrickson, with Derrickson at the helm. It will catch up with siblings Finn (Mason Thames) and Gwen (Madeleine McGraw) four years after the events of the first film. This time around, The Grabber takes to posthumously haunting Gwen, calling her in her dreams. A bit of investigating leads the siblings to Alpine Lake Camp. There, they make an alarming discovery suggesting a connection between their family and The Grabber.

Check out the official trailer for Black Phone 2 below:

So, what did you think, dear reader? Do you dig the wintery vibe of this upcoming sequel? How about the camp setting that calls to mind classic slasher pictures of yesteryear? I must admit that I really appreciate both because each marks a noticeable departure from the first film, suggesting the filmmakers have plenty of original ideas in store for us.

I am also particularly pleased to see that Thames and McGraw are returning as the brother sister duo from the first film. The sibling dynamic between those two stands as one of my favorite things about the original film. They have believable chemistry that kept me invested in their plight and made me care deeply about each of them. Their return gives the viewer something familiar to look forward to amidst the change of setting and season.

Now that you’ve seen the trailer, we’d love to hear what you think. Make sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
