Recently, we received an email here at Dread Central full of photos of sticky notes posted around New York City, begging people to check out the website, lascrucesmissing.net. The person emailing us asked if we knew anything about this, since we post so often about true crime, and if we had heard anything about it. While we can’t dig into every email we receive, something about this one pulled me in. So, I began to dig into the site and what this could be about (if it’s about anything).
First, before even visiting the site, I did some brief research into Las Cruces, which is a major city in New Mexico. Also known as the City of Crosses, it’s actually the second most populated city in the state, with a predominantly Latino population. Surrounding the city are gorgeous mountains and vistas worth exploring. It seems like another beautiful desert town in the Southwest, nothing too suspicious, at least on the surface.
Digging A Little Deeper In Las Cruces
Once I dove into the website, lascrucesmissing.net, a bigger picture started to emerge. At the top of the site, a ticker indicates that there are at least 32 missing people from the city that has disappeared under mysterious circumstances. The site, which hasn’t been updated since 2023, includes strange photos and text posts that feel like borderline ramblings of a madman. But, within those ramblings, emerges a troubling story. Posts dating back to 2021 recount a narrative from a man who was fired for stealing a body from the morgue, but he claims someone else did. Someone named Kevin Brown, who was wearing a key around his neck.
From there, the posts include Bible verses and photos, telling people to look for the keys. Which I assume means a literal key around someone’s neck, not unlike the one worn by one Kevin Brown. From this website, it sounds like the city’s unhoused population is being targeted by a sinister force.
So what does it all mean? Does it mean anything? We aren’t sure yet, but we’re continuing to dig into the story. We’ll make sure to keep everyone updated about any discoveries through our research.
