Move Over ‘Good Boy,’ the ‘OBEX’ Trailer Introduces us to Horror’s Next Best Dog

Obex

Are we currently in an era of dog horror? Of course, it’s presently Good Boy taking the world by storm. With a wide-release and sensational marketing campaign (including a fun PSA clarifying the status of star, Indy), we’re likely poised to see much more canine horror in the future. And who could blame the studios? In our Good Boy review, we wrote, “Don’t let the gimmick fool you; Good Boy is primed to be one of the most chilling movies of 2025.” It certainly is. But is Indy the horror dog of the moment? Maybe, but he’s got some stiff canine competition on the way courtesy of Albert Birney’s upcoming OBEX.

OBEX is set to release on January 9 of next year. It’s a weird one, but it’s also one of the most affecting, tender, strange, and nostalgic horror releases in quite a while. Take a look at the official synopsis alongside some stills below and let me know what you think:

Per Oscilloscope Laboratories: In pre-internet 1987, Conor and his dog Sandy live a life of seclusion, lost in the slow-rendering graphics of early Macs and televisions aglow with late night horror movie marathons. But when he begins playing OBEX, a new and mysterious, state-of-the-art computer game, he finds himself trapped in a low-tech, but high-stakes analog hellscape as the line between reality and game blurs.

Audacious and uncanny, writer-director Albert Birney’s OBEX is a delightfully skewed lo-fi fantasy. Shot in striking black and white, this surreally nostalgic nightmare revisits the dawn of personal computing to reflect on the loneliness of our always-online present day.

In my review of OBEX out of last year’s Sundance Film Festival, I wrote, “OBEX wants you to fight demons and save your dog. Albert Birney’s feature is fantastical and weird enough to convince me to do just that.” Yes, there’s a dog, and while I’m a dog’s dog, never one to put one canine against another, I think Sandy is just as good as Indy. There’s space for them both, and I hope this is just the start of canine-centric meditations on life vis-à-vis horror movies.

What do you think? Any plans to check out OBEX when the film releases next year? What do you think of the trailer? Is dog horror having a moment? Let me know your thoughts on any of those questions by checking in with me on Twitter @Chadiscollins.
