If you’ve seen Nope, you know how terrifying chimpanzees are. Make them angry, and you may just lose an arm… or your life. In his new film, Primate, Johannes Roberts takes that very real threat and turns it up to 11 when a family’s pet chimp turns against them. They must fight for survival against a creature who, while not human, is still intelligent and also incredibly, impossibly strong.

Dread Central’s Matthew Jackson reviewed Primate out of Fantastic Fest 2025, where the film had its world premiere. In his review, he said,
“Primate‘s story beats are familiar. Its filmmaking tricks and techniques are well-worn. Its script is predictable to anyone who knows this subgenre. But in the end, when you see this movie with a crowd primed for popcorn horror, none of that matters. It’s just fun, and audiences will have a blast with it when it hits theaters in early 2026.“
Roberts directs the film from a script he penned with Ernest Riera.
Johnny Sequoyah, Jessica Alexander, Troy Kotsur, Victoria Wyant, Gia Hunter, Benjamin Cheng, Charlie Mann, and Tienne Simon star in the film.
Primate comes to theaters on January 9, 2026.
