Before there was Chucky, there was Fats, a ventriloquist dummy with an appetite for destruction. Fats appears in the 1978 horror film Magic alongside Anthony Hopkins, who features as Fats’ unstable handler. The Hollywood Reporter has learned that the picture is getting the remake treatment with Sam Raimi and Roy Lee (Weapons) on board to produce the upcoming redux. Friday the 13th scribes Mark Swift and Damian Shannon are set to write the script.
Shannon and Swift have a solid history with existing IPs. They have a proven track record of delivering screen treatments that pay homage to the source material but ultimately bring enough original ideas to stand on their own two feet. With Lee and Raimi on board to produce, this is sure to be a noteworthy reimagining. No word just yet on who will sit at the helm of the impending reboot.
The original catches up with Corky (Hopkins), a down-on-his-luck ventriloquist, as he begins working with a new dummy called Fats. Suddenly, things take a turn, and he finds himself under consideration for a network series. Concerned that his fragile mental state will stand in his way, Corky runs back to his hometown, where he reconnects with a former classmate (Ann-Margret). Though Corky is pleased to reignite an old flame, Fats is none too impressed, leading to deadly consequences.
Magic pulled in $23.8 million at the box office in 1978, making it a moderate success and the fourth-highest-grossing horror movie of that year.
