Netflix Now Has Denzel Washington’s Biblically Intense Thriller: “Such an Underrated Film”

Denzel Washington

Denzel Washington has appeared in a variety of films that span numerous cinematic styles, ranging from action to drama to comedy. His genre film credits, however, are few and far between. He toplined the criminally underrated supernatural thriller Fallen. But that’s about it for the actor’s actual horror credits. He has dabbled in science fiction on occasion, featuring in the ‘90s sci-fi actioner Virtuosity and the time travel epic Deja Vu. He also appeared in the controversial post-apocalyptic sci-fi feature The Book of Eli, which is now available to stream on Netflix.

Although the film had a reasonably successful run at the box office, it has proven plenty divisive in the years since its 2010 release. While it absolutely has its fans, some outspoken critics say The Book of Eli is filled with heavy-handed religious propaganda. Others, however, posit that the picture is anti-faith based on its depictions of religion as a means of manipulation. The fact of the matter is that sibling filmmakers Albert Hughes and Allen Hughes (who are credited on this project as the Hughes Brothers) didn’t necessarily mean to make a movie that was pro religion or anti religion. They ultimately intended to provide neutral commentary on faith as a double-edged sword that can be used for either good or evil.

Working from a script by Gary Whitta, the siblings set the action 30 years after a nuclear holocaust. The proceedings catch up with lead character Eli (Washington), a drifter who ultimately finds himself tasked with protecting a sacred book that some believe contains the key to salvation.

As I mentioned previously, the reactions to this one are all across the board. Critics skewed more negative in their critiques, while movie lovers leaned more positive in their assessments. Because I am all about spreading positivity, I have cobbled together a sampling of responses that speak to the film’s collective merits. Keep scrolling to see what fans of the flick have to say.

So, there you have it. Many of the film’s supporters consider it an underrated effort that is well worth a look. If you are curious to see where you stand, you can currently find The Book of Eli streaming on Netflix.

That’s all we’ve got for you at present. Be sure to stay tuned to the site in the near future for more enticing updates from the streaming scene.
