A New ‘Friday the 13th’ Movie is on the Way: “They are working on it”

It’s been a long time since we’ve seen Jason Voorhees on the big screen. I would know. The last time I saw the hockey-masked killer slice and dice his way through teenage campers, I was layering Aeropostale polo shirts over one another with baggy jeans while considering frosted tips. Since Jason last appeared in Marcus Nispel’s 2009 reboot, the franchise has been bogged down in murky, at times incomprehensible, legalese, though that’s recently changed. Peacock and A24 are currently at work on a Camp Crystal Lake prequel series, and according to filmmaker Mike P. Nelson (Silent Night, Deadly Night), it shouldn’t be much longer before we see Jason Voorhees back in cinematic form.

In an exclusive from Ryan Scott at SlashFilm, Nelson—who helmed this year’s Friday the 13th short film Sweet Revenge— had good news regarding the future of the franchise. It appears that Jason is back in business, for real this time, and Nelson even had some interesting ideas of his own regarding how that might happen.

While speaking with Scott about the future of the franchise, Nelson remarked, “They are working on it [a new film], that I can promise you, because I’ve heard of it and because I have that direct communication with them, it’s there.” You can check out Nelson’s remarks in full below:

“They are working on it, that I can promise you, because I’ve heard of it and because I have that direct communication with them, it’s there. So that’s really happening. And yes, they have reached out [to me about it]. As have other people. I can’t say too much, but I will say that I have given my two cents, I have given them my take, and right now it’s in their court and we’ll go from there.”

Horror Inc. vice president Robbie Barsamian, per Bloody Disgusting, previously shared, “I can tell you that a new sequel movie and new sequel game are at the top of our list. It’s where most of our energy’s going right now.” As for Nelson’s take, he promises something fans haven’t seen before, sharing, “Get out there and try something. That’s the reason why the original content worked so well, because somebody went out and did something.”

While we’ll have to wait to see what this really means—we have been promised more Jason for years now, if we’re being honest—it at least seems like the newfound Jason Universe is hard at work on something new. Just… when it comes to the sequel game, please don’t make it another asymmetrical multiplayer game. Otherwise, I’m game for anything.

Mike P. Nelson’s Silent Night, Deadly Night hits theaters on December 12.
