It’s no great secret that dogs make the world a better place. They never judge; they’re always up for a cuddle, and their loyalty is unwavering. In fact, I’ve got two of them draped on me as I write these very words. Indeed, the human/canine bond is nearly unbreakable. That’s why the mere thought of a rabid pup sends chills down my spine. As a fellow animal lover, Stephen King understands what a terrifying prospect that is, and he explored it in horrifying detail in his bestselling novel Cujo. The tome’s resounding success eventually led to a feature film adaptation helmed by Lewis Teague. As luck would have it, that very adaptation is now available to stream on Paramount+.
Many fans consider Cujo one of the most devastating screen adaptations of a King property. The performances are universally recognized as top-notch, with King himself having previously named Dee Wallace’s show-stopping performance in the film as the best in any screen rendering of his work. High praise indeed when considering that Kathy Bates took home an Oscar for her turn as Annie Wilkes in Misery.
Wallace features as Donna, a wife and mother who must spring into action to protect her son, Tad (Danny Pintauro), when the titular St. Bernard traps the two of them in their Ford Pinto, stalking them like prey.
The picture received fairly mixed reviews when it debuted in theaters, and its box office returns were modest. However, the flick has absolutely found its audience in the decades since. In fact, the film (and the King novel on which it is based) is now firmly rooted in the pop culture pantheon, with “Cujo” frequently serving as colloquial terminology for a rabid animal.
It’s not just the terminology that keeps the film in the public consciousness, of course. Most fans consider Cujo absolutely terrifying, with many reporting that the film instilled fear in their hearts and left scars that have yet to heal. You can see exactly what I mean below.
Here’s what fans have to say about the film:
