While the premiere episode of “Lovecraft Country” was a mostly faithful adaptation of the first 60 pages of Matt Ruff’s book, documenting the road trip travels of Atticus, Letitia and George through a treacherous landscape filled with monsters both human and Lovecraftian, the episode’s opening sequence was a bold departure from anything present in Ruff’s novel.
Immediately putting its own stamp on the material, the HBO series kicked off with a 2-minute dream sequence that took us inside the head of science fiction-lover Atticus Freeman (Jonathan Majors), populated by memories of war and cameo appearances from both real-life heroes and horror story monsters. Namely, Jackie Robinson and Cthulhu himself.
Cthulhu doesn’t actually appear at any point in Matt Ruff’s novel but the Misha Green-created HBO series worked him into the opening minutes of its premiere episode, flying across a retro-looking sci-fi landscape before being dispatched (for a moment, at least) by Jackie Robinson… with a baseball bat. Robinson wields the bat like a machete, slicing the beast clean in half. It was unquestionably one of the coolest starts to a television series we’ve ever seen, a highly unexpected treat even for those who are intimately familiar with the source material.
Coupled with the episode’s shockingly gruesome, monster-filled final minutes, well, it’s pretty clear that “Lovecraft Country” has designs on taking the novel to a whole new level.
