Brilliant. Bad. A little bit mad.
Disney’s live-action film Cruella is positioned as a sort of origin story for the classic 101 Dalmatians villain Cruella de Vil, with Academy Award winner Emma Stone in the title role.
The first official trailer for the movie has been released this morning, and it brings along with it surprisingly strong Birds of Prey vibes. Stone looks to be having a blast playing Disney’s own version of Harley Quinn, a character who just plain relishes the joys of being a psychopath. This one looks like a bit of a different film from Disney, and could prove to be quite fun.

The all-new live-action feature film is about the rebellious early days of one of cinemas most notorious – and notoriously fashionable – villains, the legendary Cruella de Vil.
Cruella, which is set in 1970s London amidst the punk rock revolution, follows a young grifter named Estella, a clever and creative girl determined to make a name for herself with her designs. She befriends a pair of young thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, and together they are able to build a life for themselves on the London streets. One day, Estella’s flair for fashion catches the eye of the Baroness von Hellman, a fashion legend who is devastatingly chic and terrifyingly haute, played by two-time Oscar® winner Emma Thompson. But their relationship sets in motion a course of events and revelations that will cause Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the raucous, fashionable and revenge-bent Cruella.
Disney’s Cruella is directed by Craig Gillespie (I Tonya) from a screenplay by Dana Fox and Tony McNamara, story by Aline Brosh McKenna and Kelly Marcel & Steve Zissis.
The film will be released on May 28, 2021.
