We joke about sending horror characters to space, but let’s be honest, who didn’t love seeing Leprechaun, Jason Voorhees, and even Pinhead slashing up the cosmos?
Chucky seems primed for a trip to space, especially since the franchise has shown such vast versatility through several movies and now an ongoing television series. Child’s Play creator Don Mancini spoke with Comicbook about this, even teasing that he’s joked about sending the possessed doll into space.
“I don’t think I’ve ever come up with like, oh, Chucky couldn’t possibly go there,” he told the site. “I think one of the great things about Chucky is that he’s such a versatile character and we’ve found that he operates successfully in all kinds of different tones and subgenres, whether it’s horror, or comedy, places in between. So I think as a character he’s versatile enough and appealing enough and interesting enough that he could probably go anywhere…even into outer space. Which is the one thing…once I jokingly said something about sending Chuck into space, although I do think it would be a fun movie.”
He’s aware there’s a stigma attached to the concept, albeit Chucky kind of skirts the issue.
“I mean, I think ‘X Goes to Space’ is usually a barometer for jumping the shark,” Mancini noted. “But I mean, who wouldn’t want to see Chucky in a little spacesuit with a helmet, sort of like floating?”
With all of these billionaires recently making headlines by shooting themselves to the edge of space, maybe it’s not as ridiculous of a concept as it used to be? Would you like to see Chucky in space? Who else? Maybe Freddy?
