With Resident Evil Requiem being playable at Gamescom 2025 in August, and the game’s release scheduled for early next year, we’re all hoping for more info on the game to arrive sooner rather than later. Capcom has obliged somewhat in a new Creators’ Message video, revealing a little more info on Requiem‘s development. That includes the reveal that early on, one of the game’s original incarnations was online-based.
Available on Capcom’s website (it’s free to sign up), the new developer diary video features Requiem director Koshi Nakanishi revealing that the development team early on had experimented with several gameplay styles for the ninth entry in the series. That included an online version, which you can see early footage of in the video.
“You might have heard some of the rumours, things like an online Resident Evil or an open world Resident Evil, which we spent some time experimenting with,” said Nakanishi. “But in the end, although we had some interesting concepts, we realised that it wasn’t what fans wanted to see or play. So we went back to the drawing board and created what led to Resident Evil Requiem.”
In addition, Nakanishi talked about the concept of Requiem, referring back to Resident Evil 7, where everything was for the sake of fear. “We were focused entirely on fear [with Resident Evil 7] — everything was designed to be terrifying.” That focus on fear continued with the Resident Evil 2 remake, and while it still existed with the Resident Evil 4 remake, the focus on action took a more substantial role. “The fear that we created in Resident Evil 7 is preserved at its core, but we wanted to take it a step further. That is the spirit behind Resident Evil Requiem.”
Art Director Tomonori Takano also made an appearance, describing the style for Requiem as Metal & Noir. “Film noir often implies black-and-white visuals, that it’s generally set in urban environments, and that it includes elements like urban crime and modern suspense. Metal refers to metal as in the material, and in CG graphics, it also means reflections. Regarding the metal aspect — previous titles were often set in rural areas with lots of nature. This time [Requiem] is more focused on the urban environment.”
The duo also discuss Requiem’s protagonist in Grace Ashcroft, whose gameplay was glimpsed at in written previews earlier this month.
Resident Evil Requiem will launch February 27 for PC via Steam, PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series. Requiem will be playable at this year’s Gamescom, which kicks off in Cologne on August 20.
