‘Amy Bradley Is Missing’ Review: Netflix Docu-series Shines the Spotlight on One of the Most Compelling Unsolved Cases of the Past 30 Years

For many who consume true crime content, the most compelling cases to examine are those that remain unsolved years on from the inciting event.  Whatever the reason, there’s something undeniably captivating about a baffling case with no easy answers. The Netflix docu-series Amy Bradley Is Missing recalls such a case, which has far more questions than answers. In Amy Bradley’s mysterious disappearance, loose ends and conspiracy theories abound with very little concrete evidence for her loved ones to grab hold of.

Amy’s case is different from many in that her body was never recovered, and credible witness sightings in the years since her disappearance give family and friends hope that she may still be alive. Amy was last seen on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship in 1998. She was sailing the open seas with her mother, father, and brother. Speculation abounds regarding exactly what happened the day Amy went missing. Some theories suggest that she fell overboard, others posit that she was sold into sex slavery. The latter has been potentially corroborated by a number of eyewitness accounts. Even still, after nearly 30 years, the case remains unsolved. Despite decades of dead ends, however, Amy’s family remains as committed as ever to figuring out what happened to her.

The investigation into Amy’s disappearance has been complicated by a number of factors, one of which is the fact that she disappeared from international waters. Additionally, her family and friends lament the perceived lack of urgency on the part of Royal Caribbean after she went missing. The cruise line didn’t immediately sound the alarm when Amy vanished, leaving her family to scramble to locate her without a lot of resources or support. Further complicating matters, when the FBI arrived on the scene, they were limited by jurisdictional complications, as well as a lack of evidence. Though they were authorized to question the passengers, they were unable to take evasive action like they would have been able to back in the States.

The case at the core of the series features more twists and turns than anything a screenwriter could dream up. The sightings and conspiracy theories regarding Amy’s disappearance are truly mind-boggling. Just as I began to think that she’d almost certainly been murdered, we hear testimony from a variety of seemingly credible eye witnesses who claim to have spotted Amy on land following her disappearance. The accounts are vexing because every last sighting has ultimately proven fruitless. Moreover, some of the details provided by the eye witnesses seem to fly in the face of everything that those who loved Amy knew about her. One witness says that Amy told him she went to shore to score drugs for her and her brother. Yet, her brother has no knowledge of that, and everyone who knows Amy says she was never a drug user.

If the eyewitness accounts are legitimate, it’s a shame that someone didn’t speak up sooner. Many of the sightings weren’t reported for several years, making them even more challenging to verify.  Some of that comes down to self-perseveration, with witnesses fearing for their own well-being, but it’s still hard to hear that some initially turned a blind eye to something so heinous.

All of the speculation ultimately leads to an absolute bombshell revelation in the third episode. We eventually hear from someone close to a suspect in Amy’s disappearance, and that testimony only serves to fuel suspicions even more.

As devastating as the details surrounding Amy’s departure and subsequent investigation are, it’s encouraging to see the way that her family and those closest to her rallied in an effort to find out what really happened to her. Despite all the complicating factors, Amy’s loved ones came together with a singular focus on finding her. And nearly three decades later, with little to show for their efforts, they are still just as determined and committed as ever.

Amy Bradley Is Missing explores Amy’s disappearance through a combination of archival news footage and present-day interviews with those who knew her best. We get a clear picture of Amy’s character over the course of this three-episode series. She was fun-loving, loyal, funny, and fierce (and may still be, seeing as many believe she’s still among the living). No matter her fate, Amy left a profound impact on those whose lives she touched. That much is apparent by the devotion with which her loved ones speak about her, and the enthusiasm with which they optimistically await her possible return.

This is a case that may never be solved. Yet, I hold out hope that this Netflix docu-series might lead to renewed interest in the case or compel a reluctant witness with crucial information to come forward. No matter the outcome, Amy Bradley Is Missing is well worth diving into. It’s respectful reporting that keeps the focus where it belongs. Directors Ari Mark and Phil Lott center the proceedings squarely on Amy and her family, providing a nuanced look at the missing woman and the profound impact she had on those she loved.
