There’s something exceptionally satisfying about a long-awaited sequel finally making its way out of development hell and into cinemas. We, as fans, get so excited when we hear whispers of a sequel to a beloved IP gaining momentum after a series of false starts and stops.

For instance, 28 Years Later felt like a project that might never actually materialize. Yet, when it finally did, fans showed up in a big way, making the film the most successful series installment to date. That seems to suggest that releasing sequels in rapid succession may not always be a surefire recipe for success. Perhaps steadily building anticipation is a more effective strategy. Even though a delayed path to release is usually unintentional, it often yields impressive results.

We saw a similar phenomenon with the latest installment in the Final Destination franchise. Final Destination: Bloodlines was in development for years. It ultimately began to feel like the sixth series installment would never come to fruition. However, after a number of false starts and stops, the film eventually made its way to theaters and went right to work setting records. The film enjoyed the best opening weekend of any Final Destination film to date and stands as the top-grossing series installment with more than $300 million in global box office receipts.

What is Final Destination: Bloodlines about?

Plagued by a violent and recurring nightmare, a college student heads home to track down the one person who might be able to break the cycle of death and save her family from the grisly demise that inevitably awaits them all.

The film’s success story didn’t stop with its theatrical bow. The flick landed on HBO Max on August 1, 2025, and immediately began charting. More than a month later, the film is still raking in the views. In fact, it stands as the most-watched title on the streamer today, proving that long-gestured sequels have the very real potential to drum up the kind of anticipation and excitement that isn’t easily dampened.

This film resonated with fans in large part thanks to the way that it marks a welcome return to form, with gory and elaborate send-offs that are as engaging as they are grotesque. Directors Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein demonstrate a clear understanding of what fans want while putting their own unique spin on the property. As such, they managed to deliver a fan-favorite entry that even succeeded in winning over critics. That’s right, Final Destination: Bloodlines is the most critically acclaimed series installment to date. The film is certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with a stellar approval rating of 92%. Nice work, fellas.

That is just about all that we’ve got for you at present, dear reader. Be sure to stay tuned to the site in the near future for more enticing updates from the streaming space.
