This Under-Seen Stephen King Adaptation is Now Free to Stream: “I cannot scream loud enough how underrated this movie is”

Stephen King is the living author with the most screen adaptations to his name. That’s pretty remarkable, no? His words have been adapted into countless feature films and television series. Among those efforts, many get plenty of praise for their efficacy. CarrieStand by Me, and The Shawshank Redemption are all universally beloved. The Shining, though not necessarily a seamless translation of the source material, remains top-tier cinema for most. But with so many adaptations out there, some of King’s screen renderings are bound to get lost in the shuffle. Like Hearts in Atlantis, for example.

Hearts in Atlantis didn’t really make its mark on the box office when it debuted in 2001, nor did it impress critics much. However, the picture has developed a dedicated cult following over the past two decades, and many of the film’s fans consider it criminally underrated.

What is Hearts in Atlantis about?

The film follows young Bobby (Anton Yelchin), a boy who develops a meaningful bond with Ted (Anthony Hopkins), an elderly boarder to whom his mother begins renting a room. As the two get to know one another, Bobby realizes that his new friend has some uncanny abilities.

Those with a soft spot for the film often praise it as a meaningful coming-of-age story with a compelling dynamic between Yelchin and Hopkins. Many have also taken care to compliment the performances from both actors.

Rather than tell you what people are saying about the film, why don’t I show you instead? Below, I have compiled a selection of social media reactions to the picture that capture how fans feel about this one.

Here’s what people have to say about Hearts in Atlantis:

I can only imagine that the reactions above made you curious about where you can watch the film. Well, I’ve got good news for you, dear reader. Hearts in Atlantis is now available to stream for free on Kanopy.

In case you aren’t familiar, Kanopy is free to (almost) anyone with a library card. The platform operates on a credits system, allowing patrons to stream several films per month for free. Better yet, all of the titles on the platform are available sans advertising.

Well, that’s just about all that we’ve got for you this time around. Be sure to stay tuned to Dread Central in the very near future for more exciting updates from the streaming scene.
