We last saw the heroes of the Zombieland franchise back in 2019 with Zombieland: Double Tap. Fans of the popular zombie films have been waiting with ravenous hunger for any news on a third movie. Well, in a recent chat with Deadline, writer/director Ruben Fleischer gave an update to the outlet on when we can expect more comedic antics with the undead.
When asked about what motivates him now in his career versus when he first started out, Fleischer threw out a mention of the next Zombieland film. “I’m hoping that we’ll do a Zombieland 3 in 2029. We’re starting to talk about that because [the first] one was 2009, and then we did the second one in 2019, and we kind of left that one all saying, “We’ll see you in 10 years.” That’s coming up now, and so we’re starting to figure that out, so I’m hoping that’ll come together. Then, I’ve got a few things that are raring to go, so we’ll see which one comes first.“
The first Zombieland film saw characters Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson), Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg), Wichita (Emma Stone) and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin) all team up as they try to survive a zombie apocalypse. Through Columbus’ memorable rules for surviving the flesh-munching undead and a group of lovable characters, the zombie comedy snatched the attention of fans on its way to becoming a box office hit.
So, while there may not be any details on the plot in this update, we’ll take what we can get. Personally, I love the idea of a new Zombieland every ten years as a way to see how these characters grow over time.
As for what Fleischer plans on doing next? “There’s this Western vampire movie that I’m really excited about, that’s like a classic Western with a vampire at the center of it. Like Unforgiven, if Clint Eastwood was a vampire. I’m really hoping to make that. I feel like the two genres that I dreamed of making were a gangster movie and then a Western. So I’m hoping that I’ll get the chance to make a Western.“
After the success of Sinners, now seems like as good of a time as any for a vampire western. We’ll stake out our seats now.
