Melissa Barrera has been in the headlines over the past 24 hours after making some wild statements about the studio and her fellow Scream cast, but she’s also heading to Cannes with a new project that she’ll star in.
Variety reports that the Scream and Scream VI star is set to take the lead in upcoming feature Inhabit, hailing from writer/director Adam Alleca (Standoff, The Last House on the Left, Delirium).
The film is described as blending “psychological horror with relentless supernatural dread” and offering a “chilling exploration of trauma, motherhood, and the responsibility of unfathomable power.”
Inhabit follows a young woman who, following a traumatic life-changing event, moves into a rundown apartment complex in search of a fresh start. When she’s terrorized by bizarre occurrences — unhinged neighbors, uncanny stalkers, unprovoked violence — she comes to believe she’s being targeted by a possessive force that breaks her understanding of reality. As the synopsis reads: “A force that can only be overcome by confronting the darkest parts of her own nature.”
“True horror means forcing the audience to confront a universal existential fear no one’s ever dared to tell a story about before. I’ve found such a fear in Inhabit,” said Alleca. “My inspirations are the kind of audacious, character-driven thrillers I love, like Rosemary’s Baby, The Exorcist, and Get Out. Their innovation is my North Star.”
Logical Pictures Group are financing the project and launching international sales at the upcoming Cannes Film Market, and is jointly repping U.S. rights with Range Select.
