Paradise City Sales has boarded international sales on Baran: Inheritance, a Malaysian supernatural horror feature from filmmaker Joel Soh (Polis Evo), ahead of the European Film Market, reports Variety.
A haunting tale of familial reckoning, Baran marks Soh’s solo-directorial debut and is rooted in Malaysian folklore and spiritual belief systems, exploring generational trauma through the lens of possession and ancient curses.
The story follows an estranged son who returns to his remote village to care for his dying father, only to uncover that his bloodline is bound by an old pact with a demonic Djinn. As he is pulled into the shadowy worlds of shamanism and exorcism, he must confront whether he can sever the inheritance before it consumes him and his family entirely.
Soh describes the project as deeply personal. “Baran: Inheritance draws on personal experience of fear, control and trauma passed down through generations,” he said. “Inspired by Malaysia’s dark folklore and spiritual beliefs, the film confronts the unsettling truth of becoming what we once feared and asks whether we can ever break free.”
The cast is led by Malaysian stars Farid Kamil and Diana Danielle, alongside Wan Hanafi Su and Azman Hassan, with a special appearance by Aaron Aziz.
Watch for U.S. distributor and release news as it comes in.
