We’ve covered these “port DOOM to x” stories before, and it’s almost comedic how fans have been able to bring the classic FPS to everything from calculators, printers, to old McDonald’s cash registers. But, it’s a testament to not only how the geniuses at id were able to code the game, as well as just how enduring DOOM is after all these years.
Anyways, the latest achievement is getting the game to run on a Playdate, an upcoming handheld console with a crank as part of its control scheme. Seriously. Game developer Nic Magnier posted footage of his port on Twitter earlier this week showing the game in action. Yeah, it’s closer to what you’d see on the calculator ports, but once again, it’s charming how Nic was able to pull it off.
And yes, due to popular demand, Nic posted a follow-up tweet with the crank being used to fire the chaingun.
First playable version of Doom on the Playdate. Still very early but I guess I will cross out "Port Doom" from my bucket list. My main inspiration was @fabynou Game Engine Black Book. pic.twitter.com/Qy21oTYkvf
