‘Summer of 84’ Writers Tease Their New “Mystery-Romance-Horror” Film ‘The Knocking’

Writers Matt Leslie and Stephen J. Smith took us back to the ’80s with their nostalgia-fueled horror movie Summer of ’84 back in 2018, and the duo has a new horror movie in the works.

Leslie and Smith, in addition to writing the script, will also be making their directorial debuts with The Knocking, teased in a new chat with Knight Light: A Horror Movie Podcast.

The duo lightly teased the project, “It sort of revolves around the idea of a Faustian bargain. Tonally, it’s sort of like a mystery-romance-horror [movie].”

Other details provided about The Knocking during the chat with Knight Light are that it will be taking a “slow burn” approach to the storytelling, with a “big impactful ending.”

It’s not tonally unlike Hereditary, where it’s something that’s like supernatural and terrifying, but also feels like it could really happen. We cannot wait to get it made and show the world,” Leslie and Smith continued. “We’re building out a really cool cast that we’re excited about right now. We’ve already got our leads and a couple of the other bigger roles.”

Filming was set to begin in April, but the production has been delayed due to the pandemic.

Abiel Bruhn co-wrote The Knocking with Leslie and Smith.

Leslie and Smith are also writing the upcoming Angel of Dust.
