‘Terminator: Dark Fate’ Star Mackenzie Davis Wants “New Things” Instead of Another Sequel

We’re most likely still talking about last year’s Terminator: Dark Fate because it was meant to begin a new trilogy. Unfortunately, the direct sequel to James Cameron‘s T2: Judgment Day failed to reignite the franchise and ended up a box office disaster.

Dark Fate was a big deal in that it retconned all sequels except Cameron’s Judgment Day. While Tim Miller directed, Cameron produced and would shepherd the project from conception to screen. Cameron even found a way to convince Linda Hamilton to return as Sarah Connor, who would later express frustration in the film’s box office failure, citing “I would be quite happy to never return. So, no, I am not hopeful because I would really love to be done.

Dark Fate co-star Mackenzie Davis shared similar frustrations in a fresh interview with NME, suggesting that there’s no demand for a sequel and that studios should be investing in new voices.

“I really loved the movie [Dark Fate] and I’m so proud of what we did, but there wasn’t a demand for it [at the box office] and to think that there’d be a demand for a seventh film is quite insane,” she tells the mag.

“You should just pay attention to what audiences want – and they want new things and I want new things.”

Davis adds: “There are many interesting people that don’t fit the mould of those who make these big franchises who have not had the chance to make movies. We should be investing in them right now.”

We here at Bloody Disgusting have been growing frustrated with the ballooning budgets of many summer blockbusters and feel like they’re being set up for failure. Still, Dark Fate only managed $260M globally, which suggests that maybe Davis is correct: this just isn’t what audiences want right now.

What do you think?
