All You Need To Know About Scary Horror Cosplay

It’s not so easy trying to come up with an amazing horror cosplay costume that no one is already wearing at the convention. This issue is further compounded when you’re pressed for time and gruesome and scary characters that not people are familiar with are in short supply. Attending a convention such as Monsterpalooza can be a nerve-wracking experience to all convention-goers and particularly for those who come in cosplay.

It’s easy to think that people are judging your makeup, costume, and overall look. Even those who are already a pro at cosplay still feel a little anxious when attending such an event. The cosplay world, however, is a very welcoming community. And the niche group of people who prefer cosplaying as horror characters is even more helpful to newbies.

This openness can be attributed to the fact that cosplaying as a villain or a horror character is notoriously difficult to pull off, even among long-time cosplayers. Unlike anime characters or superheroes, horror cosplay demands skills at a different level. For instance, regular cosplay makeup simply won't do when portraying something scary. In fact, most cosplayers will prefer paying a makeup artist or ask a makeup artist friend to help them with the look.

The costume for horror characters also requires a different kind of sewing skills. Cosplay shops only stock up on popular looks like a Triss Merigold cosplay costume. But a character like Venom or Valak from The Nun is going to be hard to come by. The best that cosplayers can do is break down the look of the character and buy the pieces separately and put it all together. It is for this particular reason that it's tantamount that cosplayers wanting to venture into the horror and monster genre have very good sewing skills.

While it's true that finding a truly unique and scary character to cosplay is going to be a bit of a challenge, it's not an impossible task. Below are some examples of horrific characters for you to try to portray.

Bitores Mendez

Also known as Father Bitores Mendez, this Catholic priest is the tall-bearded guy from Resident Evil 4. This small-town priest. His imposing stature coupled with this intimidating trench coat and an artificial left eye is enough to scare even the hardiest of gamers let alone with lowly convention-goers.

Mamuwalde

This African prince made his first appearance in the 1972 film Blacula. He was turned into a vampire by none other than Count Dracula himself. Along with his mortal wife, he was imprisoned in a coffin for many centuries which only fueled his anger and hunger for vengeance. This character requires a lot of animalistic movement and mannerism to pull off but if done right it's going to be a hit at conventions.

Deadman

Last on this list is the character of Deadman, one of the founding members of the Justice League Dark. Formerly a circus trapeze artist named Boston Brand who was murdered during a performance, he became Deadman when his spirit was imbued with the powers to possess any living creature to avenge for his murder.
