Ben Stiller Has Optioned Stephen King’s ‘Rat’ to Potentially Direct and Star in Film Adaptation

We learned just last week that Blumhouse, Ryan Murphy and writer/director John Lee Hancock are teaming up for a film adaptation of Mr. Harrigan’s Phone, one of the stories featured in Stephen King‘s new collection If It Bleeds, and this week we’ve been updated with the news that the story isn’t the only one from the collection that’s soon headed to the screen.

In fact, all four of the new King-penned stories have already been optioned.

Deadline brings us the word that Ben Stiller has optioned the tale Rat, and the site reports that Stiller is planning on directing, producing and starring in a film adaptation of the novella.

Wikipedia explains, “The story centers on a writer named Drew Larson. He’s given himself over to academia because every time he tries to turn a good idea into a novel, things go seriously bad – mentally, physically, or both. But his latest concept, a Western thriller, is gangbusters, and he goes out to an old family cabin in the woods to get the novel done. When storms, insecurities, and sickness hit, Drew strikes a sinister bargain with a rat that turns out to be a thought-provoking spin on a “Monkey’s Paw” situation. The rat offers to get rid of his writer’s block in exchange for one of Larson’s loved ones dying.”

Deadline also notes that Darren Aronofsky‘s Protozoa has optioned The Life of Chuck for Aronofsky to produce, and the titular story “If It Bleeds” may be woven into HBO’s “The Outsider.” “If It Bleeds,” after all, centers on “The Outsider” character Holly Gibney.
