Michael Crichton’s ‘Sphere’ Became a 1998 Movie and Now It’s Getting an HBO Television Series

Michael Crichton‘s 1987 novel Sphere became the feature film Sphere back in 1998, and THR is reporting today that the book is now being turned into a TV series over at HBO.

Denise Thé (“Westworld”) has been set as the show-runner of the series, and she’l also be executive producing alongside Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan and Team Downey.

THR explains, “The potential series will plunge viewers 1,000 feet into the ocean, where a group of scientists confronts the surreal, beautiful, and deadly mysteries of the universe, only to find the people closest to us may prove to be the most alien.”

Barry Levinson directed the 1998 movie, which starred Samuel L. Jackson, Dustin Hoffman and Sharon Stone. It made less money at the box office than it cost to make, so Sphere isn’t exactly the hottest of properties for HBO to get their hands on. But they obviously see huge potential in the property, so we’re excited to see what they’re able to do with the tale.

Warner Bros. Television is behind this latest adaptation of the sci-fi/thriller novel.
