[Podcasts] The Boo Crew Talks Horror and 15 Years of ‘Constantine’ with Bush’s Gavin Rossdale

Join in as Gavin Rossdale of the multi-platinum selling rock band, BUSH, hangs out for the latest episode of The Boo Crew! Delve into some of Gavin’s favorite horror films and more, including a look into BUSH’s fantastic eighth album The Kingdom that has just been released.

The album has some genre lineage itself featuring production and several co-writes with film composer Tyler Bates, known for his work in movies like 2004’s Dawn Of The Dead, The Devil’s Rejects, Slither, 300, Rob Zombie’s Halloween, Ti West’s The Sacrament, Deadpool 2, the John Wick series and his collaborations with Marilyn Manson.

“He’s got scary posters up the wall to his studio. It’s all about that stuff. The Hills Have Eyes….everything has eyes! Everything’s watching you!”

One of the songs Gavin and Tyler crafted called Bullet Holes ended up on the soundtrack for John Wick : Chapter 3 – Parabellum. It echoes a cinematic sound that BUSH has cultivated over the years. Gavin talks about that visual tendency.

“I’m just crazy about atmosphere and wide sounding records. I love film music so much that even if I do these heavier records, I still want that wide sound. I don’t like abrasive sounds. I like it really smooth and powerful. I can’t help it. I love Brian Eno he’s one of my favorites. John Williams, Gabriel Yared. I just love all those guys that take your breath away with music in movies because it’s such an integral part of elevating a scene. Music is so powerful.”

Rossdale has stepped from the stage to the big screen a few times as well, as an actor. One such time was in Francis Lawrence’s 2005 film adaption of the DC/Vertigo comic book character, Constantine, alongside Keanu Reeves, Rachel Weisz and Shia LaBeouf. Celebrating its 15th anniversary, the film is still being discovered and rediscovered by fans. The story featured Gavin as a mischievous half-demon named Balthazar (finger lickin’ good!) who got to rock some amazing prosthetics courtesy of the fine folks at Stan Winston studios and some rather sharp pinstripe suits!

“They kept the suits in case of the danger of a sequel. When I saw Keanu in New York when I went to the premiere of John Wick, I was like dude, there’s all these terrible sequels being made how is there not a Constantine sequel? I wanna be risen from the dead like a genie! He said, “I think it didn’t make enough money”. Maybe it’s like this slowburn you are talking about. Maybe it’s gonna come back and there’s going to be this desire. I think Keanu could still do it. I’m ready. I think it would be wonderful to resurrect that character!”

In case you were wondering, Balthazar’s fancy coin tricks were all done by Gavin himself, without the aid of a stunt double.

“Oh for three full months! I had a specific coin. Three full months I did it everyday all day long. Whatever I was doing.”

Gavin tells us he is set to return to film once again in another religious themed project that is already getting its share of controversy.

“I’ve just done a movie with Janell Shirtcliff, who’s an amazing photographer and it’s called Habit. Paris Jackson is playing Jesus, so there’s already like three hundred thousand people who are against her playing Jesus which is brilliant! It’s amazing promo I love it! Keep it coming! Yeah we’re terrible people. Satan’s here! Bella Thorne(‘s character) is obsessed sexually with Jesus. So they thought they were upset about Paris, wait til they find out what the movie is!”
