Ridley Scott Likely to Rethink Next ‘Alien’ Film(s)

There’s not a whole lot of new information here, but it sounds as if Ridley Scott continues to plot his way back behind the camera for the next Alien.

Scott, who directed the seminal 1979 sci-fi horror film, returned to the franchise with Prometheus, a planned one-shot prequel that evolved into its own trilogy/saga. Scott’s design came to an abrupt conclusion after the underwhelming performance of Alien: Covenant… and Disney’s purchase of 20th Century Fox.

Pre-production was underway for Alien: Awakening when Covenant underperformed at the box office. With the Disney sale awaiting approval, the film’s entire crew was quietly sent home and that was that.

It felt like the Disney sale would be the nail in the coffin for the franchise, however, Searchlight Pictures has become a safe haven for horror, offering a glimpse of what an R-rated future at Disney could look like. In fact, Scott has openly expressed interest in returning the franchise, although it’s been unclear if it would be Awakening or something new.

In the meantime, early franchise star Sigourney Weaver revealed that she had recently been sent a 50-page treatment by franchise producer Walter Hill, outlining a potential “Alien 5” that would presumably bring the actress back to play Ellen Ripley one more time.

As for Scott, he’s been making the press rounds promoting his new HBO series “Raised by Wolves” where he would once again update his status with Alien.

“That’s in process,” Scott told Forbes when asked about the future of Alien. “We went down a route to try and reinvent the wheel with Prometheus and Covenant,” he enthused. “Whether or not we go directly back to that is doubtful because Prometheus woke it up very well. But you know, you’re asking fundamental questions like, ‘Has the Alien himself, the facehugger, the chestburster, have they all run out of steam? Do you have to rethink the whole bloody thing and simply use the word to franchise?’ That’s always the fundamental question.”

The quote doesn’t really offer any new information that we didn’t already know except for doubling down that it’s unlikely we’ll see Scott’s Alien: Awakening come to fruition. And if he’s open to reinventing the wheel, it’s worth noting that he didn’t write the screenplays for either Prometheus or Covenant, which means he could be involved in the project being developed by Walter Hill.

Time will tell what happens next with Alien, but it’s starting to feel like a new film is all but inevitable.

Given that Netflix really is the master of their own data, how many times a viewer streams The Ridiculous 6, or what films don't get watched all the way straight through, or how many times someone watches an episode of Bill Nye Saves the World, it was easy for them to come up with the list based on just one percentage: 70 percent.
