[R.I.P.] ‘Alien’ Production Designer Ron Cobb Has Passed Away

It takes countless artists to bring a cinematic masterpiece like Ridley Scott’s Alien to the screen, and one of the names that has become synonymous with the classic film is Ron Cobb. Writers Dan O’Bannon and Ron Shusett brought Cobb in to work on production/conceptual artwork, and in addition to early Xenomorph designs that were ultimately unused by the production, he also designed the interior and exterior of the Nostromo ship. Notably, Cobb later went on to help design the iconic DeLorean time machine for Back to the Future.

Sadly, we’ve learned that Ron Cobb has passed away of Lewy body dementia at 83.

The Hollywood Reporter’s obituary notes, “Cobb brought to life several cantina creatures for Star Wars (1977) and came up with weaponry and sets for Conan the Barbarian (1982), the exterior and interior of the Nostromo ship in Alien (1978) and the earth colony complex in Aliens (1986) and the DeLorean time machine in Back to the Future (1985).

“His prolific design work also included the breathing tanks and helmets in The Abyss (1989), the Omega Sector logo and the H bombs in True Lies (1990)the interior of the Mothership and the stranded tanker in Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), and the vehicles of The Last Starfighter (1984).”

It’s also interesting to note that Ron Cobb is credited as the person who came up with the idea of the Xenomorph having acidic blood in Alien, a creature character trait that brought a whole new layer of terror to one of the most iconic movie monsters of all time.

Cobb is survived by his wife of 48 years, Robin Love.

Given that Netflix really is the master of their own data, how many times a viewer streams The Ridiculous 6, or what films don't get watched all the way straight through, or how many times someone watches an episode of Bill Nye Saves the World, it was easy for them to come up with the list based on just one percentage: 70 percent.
