After having some goofy fun revisiting the 2000 horror film Urban Legends: Final Cut, we then had a surprisingly serious discussion over Paul Verhoeven’s misunderstood flop Showgirls (yes, we know this isn’t horror, but give us a break, will ya?). Now we are closing out September with our first foray into Hammer Horror: Roy Ward Baker‘s 1970 lesbian vampire film The Vampire Lovers!
The film sees seductive vampire (with lesbian tendencies) Carmilla Karnstein (Ingrid Pitt) target the beautiful and the rich in 19th century Styria.

After a brief crash course on Hammer Horror, we’ll laud the performances of Ingrid Pitt as the thrice-named anti-heroic vampire Marcilla/Carmilla/Mircalla, marvel at the unusual vampire lore (shrouds?!), and lament the lack of any interesting male characters (though that is undoubtedly the point).
Plus, Mary Beth leads us in a frank discussion of bisexuality and the vampire sub-genre’s relationship to it, which isn’t too shocking considering this film is sexy af.”
