[Horror Queers Podcast] Revisiting ‘Trick ‘r Treat’, the Best Horror Anthology

Ghost Crucifixes.

As we roll through October, we’re crossing off timely entries like Hitchcock’s Rebecca, as well as “comfort” horror entries like The Final Girls and now Mike Dougherty‘s Trick ‘r Treat (shot in 2007, released in 2009).

In the horror anthology, five interconnected stories play on the traditions and tropes of Halloween. Featuring an all-star cast that includes Anna Paquin, Dylan Baker and Brian Cox, Dougherty’s stories mix macabre humor, exciting adventure and moralistic punishment to all who dare to offend Sam, the adorable tyke in footy pajamas who has become a merchandising icon.

It’s basically the perfect film to help get you into the Halloween mood, regardless of what your holiday plans entail in this weird and wacky year!

Episode 96 – Trick ‘r Treat (2007) feat. Marisa Mirabal

Keep those pumpkins lit and pass out the candy because this week on the pod we’re discussing Mike Dougherty’s 2007 (or is it 2009?) Trick ‘r Treat.

Joining us is fellow writer (and Trace’s real life co-worker!) Marisa Mirabal, who agrees with Joe that this is the best horror anthology film, why she hates superhero films and why the film’s score deserves more praise.

Plus: which segments we prefer, Sam’s ascent into the horror icon hall of fame (merchandising!) and the film’s unfortunate connection to not one, but two shitty men!

Cross out Trick ‘r Treat!

Coming up on Wednesday: We’re closing out October with horror gateway film, Hocus Pocus! Expect some singing and discussion about why this one has become a queer classic (hint: the Sanderson sisters are drag queens)
