‘Mutiny’ Infects Social Media, ‘Forgive Me’ Gets Extreme [World of Death]

Hola, Amigos! It’s been a while since I rapped at ya. Man, it’s been a crazy year so far. I was really hoping 2020 would bring us Death Ride in the House of Vampires, the new Glenn Danzig joint, but unless he surprise drops the thing on Netflix Christmas Day, I doubt that’s happening. Oh well, at least we got this month’s World of Death!

Alanah Raffery writes, directs, stars, and does chin-ups in Mutiny, a tale about “a young reporter in NYC that discovers the presence of a terrifying disease that spreads through social media (IMDb). Jesus, can you imagine if Covid was spread through social media? Fun fact! The doctor in this film is played by none other than Jack Mulcahy from Porky’s/Brothers McMullen fame! Mutiny is definitely better than Porky’s, and at least on par with Brother’s McMullen.

Kidding aside, Mutiny plays out as being way ahead of its time and offers us a glimpse at what post-Covid horror movies could look like. It is taut, terrifying, and prophetic in its portrayal of a 21st-century pandemic.

Next up is Forgive Me from writer/director Alyssa Standen. Holy shit. The movie starts with a disclaimer, which I usually just dismiss as bait, but not this time! Good looking out Alyssa. This movie is so abstract and extreme I can only describe it as David Lynch getting f$&ked by David Cronenberg, all while Kenneth Anger hangs out in the corner and watches. If you think that description is too obtuse or crude, just watch the actual movie and let me know how you’d pitch it.

Overall though, Forgive Me is a solid effort from Standen. So much so that I scoured the internet for three whole minutes looking for other stuff of hers to watch, and was genuinely disappointed when I couldn’t find either of her previous shorts.

That’s all for this month, hell this year, actually. 2020 man, what can you say? World of Death; it’s not just a clever name anymore.

Rock over London, Rock on Chicago.

The Top 10 Streaming Scary Movies of Today (According to Netflix)

Given that Netflix really is the master of their own data, how many times a viewer streams The Ridiculous 6, or what films don't get watched all the way straight through, or how many times someone watches an episode of Bill Nye Saves the World, it was easy for them to come up with the list based on just one percentage: 70 percent.
