Stay Home, Watch Horror: 5 Winter Horror Movies to Stream This Week

When the weather outside is frightful, it’s time to cozy up inside and make it a movie night, right? The best way to experience winter chills is through horror, of course.

There’s something about horror movies set in winter that makes for an added layer of dread. The dreary, sunless skies could be a factor in establishing a grim mood. But it probably has more to do with the fact that the harsh weather conditions make it all the more difficult for protagonists to outlast and survive.

This week’s streaming picks belong to winter set horror. For the characters in these movies, they’ll have to deal with dangerous foes in addition to extreme weather and winter induced isolation.

Here’s where you can watch them this week…

Anything for Jackson – Shudder

Sheila McCarthy and Julian Richings star as Audrey and Henry Walsh, a well-to-do couple mourning their young grandson’s tragic loss. Still deep in the denial stage of grief, they turn to Satanism. The couple kidnaps a pregnant woman for their ritual; they plan to transfer their grandson’s spirit into her unborn baby. The novice practitioners unwittingly bust the doors to the spirit world wide open, transforming their home into a house of horrors. Director Justin G. Dyck gives a darkly comedic and often spooky new entry in holiday horror. A winter set anti-nativity piece of Satanic terror, Anything for Jackson delivers fantastic scare sequences and creative ghost designs.

Let the Right One In – Hulu

Oskar is a lonely, shy young boy who spends most of his time alone while his mother is away at work. He’s bullied at school and without friends. One night, he meets Eli, a peculiar girl seemingly his age, and takes to her immediately. The deeper their bond grows, the more it becomes apparent that something is very off with Eli. She’s never around by day, she’s unaffected by the cold, and her caregiver happens to be a serial killer. That’s only the tip of the iceberg in this haunting coming of age tale that plays like a beautiful, atmospheric love story. Based on the novel and adapted for the screen by John Ajvide Lindqvist, Let the Right One In inspired a stage play and an American remake, Let Me In, and it’s currently available to stream on Hulu.

The Invisible Man – Peacock TV

Claude Rains stars as Dr. Jack Griffin, a chemist eventually driven mad by his experiments with injections of a drug that renders him invisible. Corrupt with power, Griffin embarks on a maniacal murder spree, with his invisibility rendering him elusive from the authorities. Despite being visible on screen for just a brief moment, Rains creates an iconic movie monster. Of all Universal Classic Monsters, the Invisible Man is the most deranged. His introductory feature happens to be set over winter, with the story beginning amidst a snowstorm. No one would think twice about a heavily bundled up man arriving in a blizzard, after all. The snowy setting makes The Invisible Man perfect for this list. But there’s also a beautiful symmetry in watching it at the end of a year that began with the release of its remake.

Curtains – Tubi, Vudu

Six young actresses are spending their weekend at a remote mansion enduring what may be the most eccentric audition for a movie role. Naturally, it’s the perfect setting for a masked killer to start picking them off one by one, and it just so happens to be winter. There aren’t too many slashers set in icy weather, and Curtains takes full advantage of its winter setting. The most memorable kills involve the creepy masked killer using the weather against the victims, including the film’s best death sequence set on a frozen pond. Sickles and ice skating equal bad news.

Cold Prey – AMC+

A group of five friends snowboarding in a secluded area of the mountains in Jotunheimen are forced to find shelter when one breaks their leg. They take refuge in a deserted lodge, wholly abandoned save for the homicidal maniac dubbed the Mountain Man. Cold Prey is a fantastic modern slasher with a stunning snowy backdrop that contributes to the group’s fight for survival. Suspenseful, brutal, and with one of horror’s most underrated final girls in Jannicke. Its excellent follow-up, Cold Prey II, is available to rent on VOD if you’re in the mood for a slasher double feature.
