‘Prisoners of the Ghostland’: Sion Sono Shares New Image and Promises Ghosts, Samurais and Ninjas

Both Nicolas Cage and Bill Moseley star in our new favorite movie that we haven’t yet seen, Sion Sono‘s (Suicide Club) action-horror extravaganza Prisoners of the Ghostland.

Cage recently noted that Prisoners of the Ghostland, Sono’s English-language debut, may be the wildest Cage movie to date, and Sono comments on that in a new chat with EW.

There are samurais, there are ninjas, and ghosts are part of the story as well,” Sono teases in his chat with Entertainment Weekly, strongly suggesting Cage wasn’t kidding.

Reacting specifically to Cage’s recent comments, Sono tells EW, “I’d rather leave that question up to the audience. However, I know that Nicolas Cage has done a lot of great works and some of the works are crazy as well. If audiences think that this is the wildest movie that he’s ever made, the craziest movie that he’s ever made, then I would be really really happy to hear that.”

Check out a new image of Cage and co-star Sofia Boutella (The Mummy) below, via EW.

The film is “set in the treacherous frontier city of Samurai Town where a ruthless bank robber (Cage) is sprung from jail by wealthy warlord The Governor (Moseley), whose adopted granddaughter Bernice (Boutella) has gone missing. The Governor offers the prisoner his freedom in exchange for retrieving the runaway. Strapped into a leather suit that will self-destruct within three days, the bandit sets off on a journey to find the young woman—and his own path to redemption.”

Cage recently described, “It’s out there. I wear a skintight black leather jumpsuit with grenades attached to different body parts, and if I don’t rescue the governor’s daughter from this state line where they’re all ghosts and bring her back they’re gonna blow me up.

Aaron Hendry and Reza Sixo Safai wrote the movie, acquired by RLJE Films.
