‘The Batman’: ‘The Ritual’ Writer Set as Showrunner for Gotham City Spinoff Series Coming to HBO Max

While we continue waiting for the Matt Reeves-directed, Robert Pattinson-starring feature film The Batman, let’s not forget that a spinoff series is already in the works for HBO Max.

The series doesn’t yet have a title at this time, but it will indeed be set in the very same world as the upcoming The Batman. It’s being described as a police procedural.

Terence Winter (“Boardwalk Empire”) had originally been set as the show-runner of the series, but Variety reports today that Winter is out and Joe Barton is now in as show-runner.

Joe Barton recently wrote the horror movie The Ritual, directed by David Bruckner.

The series “is set in the crime-infested streets of the Caped Crusader’s hometown Gotham City.”

HBO Max details that it “will build upon the motion picture’s examination of the anatomy of corruption in Gotham City, ultimately launching a new Batman universe across multiple platforms. The series provides an unprecedented opportunity to extend the world established in the movie and further explore the myriad of compelling and complex characters of Gotham.”

Matt Reeves is on board as executive producer.
