It was almost exactly one year ago that the 1988 cult-classic horror-comedy Killer Klowns from Outer Space crash landed on Netflix, introducing the Chiodo Bros.’ gonzo masterpiece to a whole new audience and likely a whole new generation. Alas, all good things must come to an end. We’ve learned today that the Klowns are leaving the streaming service next month.
Killer Klowns from Outer Space will be making its way off Netflix on March 31.
In the Stephen Chiodo-directed film, written by Charles Chiodo and Stephen Chiodo, “Aliens who look like clowns come from outer space and terrorize a small town.”
Last we heard, the Chiodos are still keeping the hope alive for a potential follow-up movie (or series), and there’s always the possibility that such a project could find a home at Netflix.
“We are talking to [Netflix]. We’re talking all the time,” Stephen Chiodo told ComicBook.com last year. “Get this: we’ve been trying to do a sequel since we made the film and fans get angry with us. We don’t mention it too much, because they get angry. They say, ‘Oh, what’s the matter with you guys?’ But we’re trying. The business is just a bear, moves at a glacial pace. There’s interest, and it wanes and flows. You get some executives who really want to do it, then, all of a sudden, musical chairs. They’re out, a new regime is in, and they don’t get it.”
Here’s hoping the Netflix viewership numbers have been strong enough this past year to make the streaming service consider partnering with MGM to bring the Klowns back to life.
We’ll continue holding out hope, as we’ve been doing for many years now.
