The man who created Hellboy wasn’t Guillermo del Toro or Neil Marshall – though both filmmakers brought him to the big screen – but rather Mike Mignola, who launched the character in 1993. With the Hellboy brand still kicking ass and taking names today, THR has announced that a documentary on Mignola’s career is now being funded via Kickstarter.
It’s appropriately titled Drawing Monsters, and THR reports that the doc will see Mignola “unveil the secrets behind his horror-filled career in a feature-length documentary.”
Interview subjects include Mignola himself as well as Neil Gaiman, Doug Jones, Adam Savage, and more. Kevin Hanna and Jim Demonakos are directing the doc together.
The Kickstarter campaign explains, “Hellboy has appeared in countless graphic novels and comic books, prose novels and short story collections, acclaimed role playing games and video games, three live action films and two animated features, and has inspired toys and collectibles. Now it’s time for award-winning Hellboy creator Mike Mignola to get his turn in the spotlight in the all new documentary Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters, the definitive story of one of the most influential and important comic book creators of all time.
“Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters is a feature-length film that tells the story of how Mike Mignola came to create a world-renowned comic book universe. The film includes never-before-seen interviews conducted with the legendary creator at his studio, drawing demonstrations, behind the scenes footage from workshops and comic book conventions, and interviews with some of the most influential people in entertainment.
