‘Silent Night, Deadly Night’: Slasher Franchise Coming Back to Life With Brand New Movie!

The 1984 holiday horror classic Silent Night, Deadly Night, controversial at the time of its release due its depiction of an axe-wielding killer dressed as Santa Claus, spawned four sequels and more recently a remake back in 2012, and today we’ve learned out of the ongoing EFM that a brand spankin’ new reboot of the slasher franchise is currently in development.

Deadine reports that the new take on the franchise is coming courtesy of Orwo Studios and Black Hanger Studios. The site notes, “Orwo is beginning sales at the virtual EFM.”

Scott Schneid and Dennis Whitehead, who produced the original Silent Night, Deadly Night, are back on board as producers for Wonderwheel Entertainment.

Wonderwheel’s Schneid and Whitehead said in a statement shared by Deadline today, “The continued desire for horror content and the ongoing success of the genre meant it was the perfect time to be able to offer up this chilling revival of the iconic title.”

The original Silent Night, Deadly Night was directed by Charles E. Sellier Jr., starring Robert Brian Wilson as Billy, who witnessed his parents get murdered by a killer dressed as Santa when he was a kid. All grown up, Billy puts on a Santa suit and goes on a killing spree of his own. The so-bad-it’s-good sequel followed Ricky (Eric Freeman), the younger brother of Billy.

As for the sequels, they increasingly had very little to do with the original storyline or even the Christmas holiday at all, with part three starring Bill Moseley as Ricky, part four centered on a cult of witches, and part five starring Mickey Rooney (who famously trashed the original Silent Night, Deadly Night) as an evil toymaker responsible for a series of gruesome deaths.

The 2012 version of the original movie was simply titled Silent Night, directed by Steven C. Miller and mostly telling its own story altogether about a killer dressed up as Santa.

No word yet on the approach for this reboot, or the creative team involved. Stay tuned.

Given that Netflix really is the master of their own data, how many times a viewer streams The Ridiculous 6, or what films don't get watched all the way straight through, or how many times someone watches an episode of Bill Nye Saves the World, it was easy for them to come up with the list based on just one percentage: 70 percent.
