Upcoming Disney Films Including ‘Cruella’ and ‘Black Widow’ Will Hit Disney+ Same Day as Theaters

We weren’t sure exactly what the release plan for upcoming live-action villain origin story Cruella was going to look like, but today brings the official insight we had been waiting for.

According to a report from Variety today, Cruella will be released onto Disney+ on the same day it’s opening in theaters, which means you’ll be able to watch at home on May 28.

Like Mulan, the film will be available via Premier Access, which will cost $30 at home.

The all-new live-action feature film is about the rebellious early days of one of cinema’s most notorious – and notoriously fashionable – villains, the legendary Cruella de Vil.

Cruella, set in 1970s London amidst the punk rock revolution, follows a young grifter named Estella (Emma Stone), a clever and creative girl determined to make a name for herself with her designs. She befriends a pair of young thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, and together they are able to build a life for themselves on the London streets. One day, Estella’s flair for fashion catches the eye of the Baroness von Hellman, a fashion legend who is devastatingly chic and terrifyingly haute, played by two-time Oscar® winner Emma Thompson. But their relationship sets in motion a course of events and revelations that will cause Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the raucous, fashionable and revenge-bent Cruella.

Disney’s Cruella is directed by Craig Gillespie (I Tonya) from a screenplay by Dana Fox and Tony McNamara, story by Aline Brosh McKenna and Kelly Marcel & Steve Zissis.

Additionally, we’ve learned today that the much-delayed Marvel Cinematic Universe solo film Black Widow will release in theaters and on Disney+ on the same day, which is now July 9.

Black Widow will also cost you $30 to watch at home via Premier Access.

This year’s Summer Movie Season is still very much in question, even with vaccines being administered at a steady clip across the country and theaters beginning to re-open at higher capacities than we’ve seen in the past year. And it looks like Disney wants to continue giving us all the option to either venture out to theaters or watch their new movies safely at home.

It’s an option Warner Bros. is similarly providing via streaming service HBO Max this year, though the big difference is that Disney+ remains committed to offering up this year’s big movies at an additional cost to those who already subscribe to their streaming service. Films like Godzilla vs. Kong and Mortal Kombat, however, will be free to HBO Max subscribers.

The Top 10 Streaming Scary Movies of Today (According to Netflix)

Given that Netflix really is the master of their own data, how many times a viewer streams The Ridiculous 6, or what films don't get watched all the way straight through, or how many times someone watches an episode of Bill Nye Saves the World, it was easy for them to come up with the list based on just one percentage: 70 percent.
