1990 Direct-to-Video Gem ‘Mirror Mirror’ Pays Homage to Horror Classics [Horror Queers Podcast]

Mirror Blood.

After an April filled with ups (Silent Hill! The Silence of the Lambs! The Innocents!) and downs (The Forsaken), Trace and I are kicking off a brand new month filled with plenty of great films and a few unusual choices.

This first episode falls into the latter category: Mirror Mirror (1990) is a direct-to-video gem known for its almost entirely female cast and crew, including screenwriting sisters Annette and Gina Cascone. The Marina Sargenti-directed film is also filled to the brim with horror movie homages, including Beetlejuice, Poltergeist and (most obviously) Carrie.

After the death of her father, goth teen Megan (Rainbow Harvest) and her mother Susan (Karen Black) move to a small town. Almost immediately, Megan falls under the sway of a demonic mirror in her bedroom, which grants her the ability to strike back at bullies like Charleen (Charlie Spradling), Jeff/Tom (Tom Bresnahan) and cranky teacher Mr. Anderson (Stephen Tobolowsky).

But the more Megan relies on the mirror, the more power it gains over her and pretty soon her friendship with best friend Nikki (Kristin Dattilo) is under threat. Only kooky antique shop owner Emelin (Yvonne De Carlo) can help…if it isn’t already too late!

Episode 124 – Mirror Mirror (1990)

Prep your Lydia from Beetlejuice cosplay and channel your inner Carrie because this week we’re delving into Marina Sargenti’s direct-to-video film Mirror Mirror (1990). CW: the dogs die.

Written by sisters Annette and Gina Cascone, the film is almost entirely made by and starring women, including the fabulously named Rainbow Harvest, Karen Black and The Munsters‘ Yvonne De Carlo (in a very Tangina from Poltergeist-esque role).

Up for discussion: being picked last for sports, shitty high school teachers (Tobo!), Karen Black’s wigs, sex acts involving reflective surfaces and steam room titties.

Plus: Joe teaches Trace the rules of water polo and why we heartily recommend the film despite a so-so 2nd half and audacious, unconventional ending.

Cross out Mirror Mirror!

Coming up on Wednesday: We move the clock back a few years to 1998 to revisit the staff of Herrington High school in Robert Rodriguez’s sci-fi horror film The Faculty!

P.S. Subscribe to our Patreon for tons of additional content! In May we’re doing a Ghosts ‘n Zombies theme with episodes on new films like Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead and Simon Barrett’s Seance, paired with “older” films like Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead remake and Mike Flanagan’s Ouija: Origin of Evil!

The Top 10 Streaming Scary Movies of Today (According to Netflix)

Given that Netflix really is the master of their own data, how many times a viewer streams The Ridiculous 6, or what films don't get watched all the way straight through, or how many times someone watches an episode of Bill Nye Saves the World, it was easy for them to come up with the list based on just one percentage: 70 percent.
