Sony Has an Actual Plan to Have Spider-Man Swing Into Their Marvel Universe

While Peter Parker and Spider-Man have been fully integrated into Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe, the characters are actually owned by Sony, which means he could eventually find himself swinging into their own Marvel Universe.

There’s been chatter for years now, especially with Sony finding huge success with their Venom film, one of the web-slinger’s arch enemies whose origin story begins in the “Amazing Spider-Man” comics.

In a fresh interview with Variety, Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group President Sanford Panitch reveals that not only have they discussed Spider-Man’s inclusion but that they have an actual “plan”.

“We don’t really think of our 900 characters as the Spidey-verse,” he tells the magazine. “We have a Marvel universe. The volume of characters we have — you know, wait until you see this next Venom. You don’t miss Spider-Man.”

He pauses. “It’ll be exciting if they do meet, right?”

“There actually is a plan,” Panitch adds. “I think now maybe it’s getting a little more clear for people where we’re headed and I think when No Way Home comes out, even more will be revealed.”

In addition to Venom (and its sequel Venom: Let There Be Carnage), Sony also has Jared Leto starring as the vampire anti-hero Morbius (Jan. 21) and has just cast Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Kraven the Hunter, setting up a long-gestured/promised Sinister Six union, which Panitch appears to allude to above.

If you want to get into the nitty-gritty, Variety dives into the hugely convoluted nature of the Spider-Man universe and where it’s all headed. For now, the studio appears to be moving forward with their big plans and we’ll just have to wait and see if Spider-Man returns to Sony’s own Marvel Universe. Spidey vs. the Sinister Six would be a dream come true for many comic book fans.

What are you hoping to see in Sony’s own ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe?
