‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage’ Featurette: Andy Serkis Is a Director Who Can Relate to CG Characters [Video]

Horror fans unanimously hate CGI. Rightfully so, but even with that truth, it’s not all bad. Great visual effects work is so good that the viewer won’t even notice. It’s the bad CGI that fails the eye test.

It’s different when it comes to films like Venom and its forthcoming sequel Let There Be Carnage, the latter of which pits the iconic alien symbiote against a serial killer with similar abilities.

This isn’t Freddy vs. Jason, this is a huge comic book adaptation that features some of the most complicated special effects since Sam Raimi cracked putting Doctor Octopus on the big screen in Spider-Man 2. CGI is a must.

The sequel has a new director in Andy Serkis, which shocked a lot of people when announced. Yet, he’s actually the perfect talent to put behind the camera because of his own history with CGI – as you may recall, he’s the performer behind both Gollum in The Lord of the Rings trilogy and Caesar in the Planet of the Apes films.

“I’ve spent a considerable amount of my life playing a character with two sides to his personality,” Serkis explains in the following Venom: Let There Be Carnage featurette, exclusive to Apple. “There’s common ground there.”

“Digital characters have got to seriously act,” he adds. “They’ve got to be totally believable.

“I wanted to find a physical vocabulary for Carnage that was entirely different to Venom…everything was always entirely underpinned by reality and a truth.”

Serkis goes on to acknowledge that there’s a great responsibly to fans who have been waiting decades for this moment.

They won’t have to wait much longer as the two will finally clash on September 24th. Watch the new trailer right here.
