[Review] “Creepshow” Season 3 Opens With Mixed Results

While the small screen experienced a resurgence in traditional anthologies not too long ago, that moment was short-lived. The latest Twilight Zone revival, Room 104, and 50 States of Fright have all since ended. Fans of the standalone story have their limited choices nowadays, but they can count on Creepshow to keep things going. Five months after the second installment of episodes, Greg Nicotero and Shudder’s series returns with twelve new stories said to be “the most fun you’ll ever have being scared.”

The new season opens with Rusty Cundieff’s “Mums”, a comeuppance tale based on a short story of the same name by Joe Hill. Young Jack (Brayden Benson) anticipates his mother Bloom’s (Erin Beute) return after his father Hank (Ethan Embry) takes her away from him again. This is after Bloom tried to run away with Jack to his grandmother’s, but Hank stopped them in their tracks. As Jack awaits his mother, he plants the mysterious seeds she left behind. They immediately sprout in the garden, as well as reveal the truth about Bloom’s departure.

“Mums” plays out a lot like the episode “Model Kid” from the previous season. The story is predictable from start to finish, and everything here is far too lethargic and unpolished. There is a sidelined subplot about Embry’s character being an extremist who is planning a domestic attack with his friend. The episode would have been more compelling had it followed that route instead of delivering yet another “revenge from beyond” yarn. The adaptation also removes the whimsiness and ambiguity found in the source material.

The second half of the premiere is “Queen Bee”, an original story directed by showrunner Nicotero. This one satirizes the always disconcerting relationship between pop stars and their most fanatical of fans. Three teenagers, Debra (Hannah Kepple), Trenice (Olivia Hawthorne) and Carlos (Nico Gomez), are obsessed with a popular singer named Regina (Kaelyn Gobert-Harris). When they learn Regina is going into labor at a local hospital, they then sneak in to catch a glimpse of the delivery. Rather than seeing the miracle of life first hand, they witness something else altogether.

“Queen Bee” is a welcome palate cleanser after “Mums”. Not only do the teenage characters sound authentic, their infatuation with a Beyoncé-esque musician feels accurate. The story tackles serious topics — the dangers of celebrity worship and the lack of privacy these superstars have in their personal lives — while still maintaining some much needed levity when things go dark. On top of that is a splendid array of practical effects; these are some of the best in the series so far.

When approaching any anthology, always remember the golden rule of consistency; stories are rarely if ever as good as the next one. Creepshow has a longstanding history of being hit or miss, and based on these first two episodes, that pattern of quality disparity continues. At the very least, the second half of the premiere is unique and entertaining enough to offset the banality of the first part.

Season 3 of Creepshow starts streaming on Shudder on September 23.

The Top 10 Streaming Scary Movies of Today (According to Netflix)

Given that Netflix really is the master of their own data, how many times a viewer streams The Ridiculous 6, or what films don't get watched all the way straight through, or how many times someone watches an episode of Bill Nye Saves the World, it was easy for them to come up with the list based on just one percentage: 70 percent.
