“Chucky” Paid Tribute to Killer Doll Movie ‘Magic’ With This Week’s Bloody Character Death [Spoilers]

Before there was Child’s Play there was Magic, a 1978 killer doll movie starring Anthony Hopkins that was directed by Richard Attenborough and landed Hopkins a Golden Globe nomination. The film centers on a dummy named Fats, which has such an evil influence over Hopkins’s character that he begins killing at the doll’s insistence. Don Mancini has made no secret of the fact that Child’s Play was inspired by Magic, and his “Chucky” series for SYFY and USA has featured a similar storyline wherein Chucky is trying to get others to kill.

This week’s episode of “Chucky,” titled “Twice the Grieving, Double the Loss,” featured another major character death, and the kill was directly inspired by a kill from 1978’s Magic!

From this point on, this article will contain spoilers…

For the second time this season, Devon Sawa was killed off on this week’s episode of “Chucky,” with both of his characters now dead at the hands of Chucky. It was Junior Wheeler who was pushed to kill his own father in “Twice the Grieving, Double the Loss,” with Chucky’s master plan coming into focus once he convinced him to brutally murder his own father.

Junior beat Sawa’s Logan Wheeler to death with a Chucky doll, a first for the franchise that was plucked straight out of Magic. In the movie, Anthony Hopkins similarly beats a victim to death with his evil doll, which Mancini went ahead and paid homage to this week.

You can watch the bloody scene from “Chucky” below. And if you haven’t yet seen Magic, you’ll currently find the 1970s horror film streaming for free on both Tubi and The Roku Channel.
