Produced by Fede Alvarez (Evil Dead), Netflix’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre has been made with a whole lot of love for Tobe Hooper’s original classic, a good thing considering the film is a direct sequel to the 1974 movie. Even Sally Hardesty is back this time around, the very first time the final girl from the original masterpiece has made her return to the franchise.
As Alvarez and director David Blue Garcia explain to Bloody Disgusting’s Boo Crew Podcast this week, the original chainsaw from the original Chain Saw Massacre is back as well!
“We had the same chainsaw… Kim Henkel sent the original chainsaw to our office in the very beginning,” Alvarez explains to the Boo Crew. “I believe that chainsaw was on set as well.”
Blue Garcia adds, “The vintage chainsaw on set… I used it all the time. Whenever we needed a close-up of the chainsaw running, or just… something that wasn’t a stunt. Even when [Leatherface] is on the bus and he starts it up, that’s the one. That’s the old school one.”
“It was so cantankerous… it was really hard to start, sometimes it wouldn’t start,” he adds. “Once you got it started, it would produce so much smoke that… if we did it indoors, we could only run it for a minute or two before the whole set was hazy and people were coughing.”
David Blue Garcia jokes, “In reality, if [Leatherface] had gone onto the bus and started it up and just stood there for a minute, everyone would’ve died of asphyxiation.”

Netflix’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre arrives on Friday, February 18.
