‘Pennywise: The Story of IT’ – SCREAMBOX Original Documentary Coming This Summer!

We’re having a fun year playing around in the SCREAMBOX sandbox. The horror streaming service is now powered by BD, and we kicked off the year with “Masters of Horror” and then launched all 44 episodes of the highly-demanded “Freddy’s Nightmares” series.

Next up on the Bloody Disgusting-powered streaming platform is the highly anticipated documentary Pennywise: The Story of IT, an epic behind-the-scenes look at the popular Stephen King adaptations!

Crawling out of the sewers from co-directors John Campopiano (Unearthed & Untold: The Path to Pet Sematary) and Christopher Griffiths (Leviathan: The Story of Hellraiser), Pennywise: The Story of IT takes an in-depth look into the creation of this iconic villain through dozens of interviews with cast and crew.

“The central figure of one of Stephen King’s most terrifying novels, It, the character Pennywise burned itself into the country’s collective subconscious. Even thirty years after its release, the notorious villain and the popular two-part miniseries, which has gone on to achieve cult status, live on in the minds of horror fans.

The film looks at what went into creating the nightmarish films, including casting, production, and practical effects. From Tim Curry to Richard Thomas and even Seth Green, the franchise’s exceptional band of actors brought the chilling story to life across dual generations. Featuring interviews and never-before-seen footage, the documentary captures not only the spark the It saga created when it was released but also the lasting impact it has had on horror and on film in general.

Pennywise: The Story of IT had its world premiere at the Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival in Spain last Fall and had its UK premiere at FrightFest in October. It will release as a SCREAMBOX Original this summer.

Unearthed & Untold: The Path to Pet Sematary is also currently available on SCREAMBOX.

SCREAMBOX is available to stream on iOS, Android, Prime Video, YouTube TV, Comcast and screambox.com. Started by fans for fans, Screambox delivers every type of terror imaginable — Supernatural, Slashers, Classics, Zombies, Extreme, Psychological, Cult, Underground, Banned Movies and more.

“From red balloons to yellow rain jackets, the groundbreaking miniseries pushed boundaries and still has a lasting impact on the genre to this day,” said Yolanda Macias, Chief Content Officer at Cinedigm. “Even three decades after its release, It and the child-eating clown Pennywise scares audiences of all ages. We are excited to take horror fans on this terrifying journey back to the not so sleepy town of Derry.”

“We are immensely proud to be partnering with Cinedigm to release our documentary which is a labor of love to Stephen King’s classic ‘IT’. The timing couldn’t be more perfect; not only has Tim Curry’s portrayal become even more iconic with the release of action figures, t-shirts and costumes, but the works of Horror Master Stephen King have had a well-deserved resurgence with the releases of IT, IT Chapter 2, Pet Sematary, Doctor Sleep, ‘The Stand’ mini-series, and the upcoming Salem’s Lot in 2022,” added Cult Screenings UK Ltd Producer and Writer Gary Smart.

Pennywise: The Story of IT was produced by Gary Smart, John Campopiano, Adam Evans, Michael Perez, and Hank Starrs, and executive produced by Laurence Gornall, Brady William Dorman, Michael Leavy, and Jason Leavy. The deal was negotiated by Brandon Hill on behalf of Cinedigm and Laurence Gornall on behalf of Unannounced Film Company.

In the meantime, you can get an early taste of the documentary with our weekly Stephen King podcast, The Losers’ Club. Given that Netflix really is the master of their own data, how many times a viewer streams The Ridiculous 6, or what films don't get watched all the way straight through, or how many times someone watches an episode of Bill Nye Saves the World, it was easy for them to come up with the list based on just one percentage: 70 percent.
