TIFF Begins Announcing Films, Beginning With ‘Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery’, ‘The Menu’, and ‘Wendell & Wild’!

TIFF announced today the selections in the Gala and Special Presentations programmes for the 47th Toronto International Film Festival, taking place September 8–18.

“We’re excited to welcome some of the most celebrated figures in movies back to Toronto to present their Gala and Special Presentation films,” said Cameron Bailey, TIFF CEO. “With stories that span six continents and feature performances you just have to see, this lineup delivers the rich experiences we wait all year for. Cinema is alive. Red carpets are back. And the best audience in the world awaits them in Toronto.”

While we wait for the extremely hyped Midnight Madness program, the first announcement includes two major studio titles: Netflix’s Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, Searchlight Pictures’ cooking thriller The Menu, Amazon’s dramatic thriller The Nanny, and the Jordan Peele-produced and Henry Selick-directed Netflix animated film Wendell & Wild.

In Glass Onion, “Detective Benoit Blanc travels to Greece to peel back the layers of a mystery involving a new cast of colorful suspects.”

Daniel Craig is back as Benoit Blanc for the upcoming sequel, with the confirmed ensemble cast thus far also including Dave BautistaEdward Norton, Jessica Henwick, Kathryn HahnLeslie Odom Jr.Janelle MonáeMadelyn Clineand Kate Hudson.

Rian Johnson had noted back in 2020 that he was developing a sequel that would center on Daniel Craig‘s detective character investigating a new case, which is likely still the plan.

In the first film…

“When renowned crime novelist Harlan Thrombey is found dead at his estate just after his 85th birthday, the inquisitive and debonair Detective Benoit Blanc is mysteriously enlisted to investigate. From Harlan’s dysfunctional family to his devoted staff, Blanc sifts through a web of red herrings and self-serving lies to uncover the truth behind Harlan’s untimely death.”

Anya Taylor-Joy stars alongside Ralph Fiennes and Nicholas Hoult in The Menu, a film from director Mark Mylod (“Succession”) that has been described as being darkly comedic.

Searchlight Pictures will release The Menu in theaters on November 18, 2022.

The film, penned by Will Tracy and Seth Reiss, “is a darkly comedic psychological thriller set in the world of eccentric culinary culture, centering on a young couple who visit an exclusive restaurant on a remote island where an acclaimed chef has prepared a lavish tasting menu. Taylor-Joy will play one half of the couple. Fiennes is playing the chef.”

The cast also includes Hong Chau, Janet McTeer, Judith Light, Reed Birney, Paul Adelstein, Aimee Carrero, Arturo Castro, Mark St. Cyr, Rob Yang, and John Leguizamo.

Adam McKay (The Big Short) is producing The Menu for Searchlight.

The Nightmare Before Christmas and Coraline director Henry Selick is back this October with brand new stop motion movie Wendell & Wild, which teams him with Oscar winner Jordan Peele (Get Out, Us, Nope).

Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele star in a tale of “the hellishly funny demons of a teen named Kat.”

Wendell & Wild is an animated tale about scheming demon brothers Wendell (Keegan-Michael Key) and Wild (Jordan Peele) – who enlist the aid of 13-year-old Kat Elliot – a tough teen with a load of guilt – to summon them to the Land of the Living. But what Kat demands in return leads to a brilliantly bizarre and comedic adventure like no other, an animated fantasy that defies the law of life and death, all told through the handmade artistry of stop motion.”

Netflix has also revealed the entire cast: Emmy award winning Keegan-Michael Key (“Key and Peele”) as Wild, Academy Award-winner Jordan Peele (Get Out, Us) as Wendell, as well as Lyric Ross (This Is Us), Angela Bassett (Black Panther), James Hong (Kung Fu Panda), Tamara Smart (A Babysitter’s Guide to Monster Hunting), Natalie Martinez (“The Twilight Zone””), Tantoo Cardinal (Dances With Wolves), Gabrielle DennisIgal NaorDavid HarewoodMaxine PeakeRamona Young (“Never Have I Ever”), Sam ZelayaSeema VirdiGary Gatewood, and Ving Rhames (Pulp Fiction, Dawn of the Dead).

'The Nanny': Nikyatu Jusu's Horror Drama Wins Sundance's Top Prize!

After winning the U.S. Dramatic Grand Jury Prize at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, Nikyatu Jusu‘s horror movie Nanny was picked up by Blumhouse and Amazon. But before it releases, the film will screen at TIFF.

Anna Diop (Us) stars as a Senegalese immigrant nanny, piecing together a new life in New York City while caring for the child of an Upper East Side family, who is forced to confront a concealed truth that threatens to shatter her American Dream.”

Michelle Monaghan (The Craft: Legacy), Sinqua Walls (The 15:17 to Paris), Morgan Spector (The Gilded Age), and Rose Decker (Mare of Easttown) also star in Nanny.
